Descendants of Edmund Rice (1594 - 1663)

Generation No. 1

1. DEACON EDMUND1 RICE1,2,3 was born 1594 in Barkhamstead, Hertfordshire, England, and died 03 May 1663 in Marlboro, Massachusetts. He married (1) THOMASINE FROST 15 Oct 1618 in St. Mary's, Bury St. Edmund, Suffolk, England4, daughter of EDMOND FROST and THOMASINE BELGRAVE. She was born 11 Aug 1600 in Hertfordshire, England5,6, and died 13 Jun 1654 in Sudbury, Middlesex, MA7,8,9. He married (2) MERCY HURD 01 Mar 1655. She was born Abt. 1616 in Cambridge, Middlesex, MA10, and died 23 Dec 1693 in Marlboro, Massachusetts.

Notes for DEACON EDMUND RICE:

Edmund Rice was Mercy Hurd's second husband, 1 March 1655, then of Sudbury, but who moved in 1660 to Marlboro, where he died 3 May 1663. He was born 1594, and came from Barkhamstead, Hertfordshire, England; settled in Sudbury in 1638-9; resided on east side of Sudbury River in the southerly part of what is now Wayland, near the great meadows. He was selectman in 1644, and deacon of the church in 1648. His first wife was Tamazine, who came with him from England; also eight children. On Mercy's second marriage, she took with her to Sudbury and Marlboro all her children, and had 2 more with Edmund.

Notes from The History of the Brigham Family from the New Hampshire Historic Society 20 Park Street, Concord, New Hampshire, obtained by Ken and Susan Barbi on August 12, 2000.Edmund Rice came from Barkhamstead, Hertfordshire, England and settled in Sudbury, MA in 1639. He was prominent in Sudbury, being a selectman and one of the Deacons of he church. He was honored with several appointments to the General Court, and was denominated therein "Goodman Rice". He removed to Marlboro soon after the grant of the township, and took up his abode on waht is known as the "great road," on the northerly side of the Pond, not far from the Williams Tavern. There are six lines in the Fay geneology which go back to Edmund Rice, and there is also at least one line in the Morse geneology. This is not surprising, as to quote Charles Hudson's "History of the Town of Marlboro, the Rices were one of the earlies and most numerous families in the town--ranking with the Howes and the Brighams, and like them sending out emigrants to many other towns. Edmund is buried in Wayland, MA. His grave is marked by a monument designed by a descendant, Arthur Wallace Rice of Boston. The monument was dedicated by the Edmund Rice Association on August 29, 1914. A boulder with a bronze tablet was also erected by the association and it marks Edmund's homestead on the old Connecticut Path in Wayland, MA.

Deacon Edmund Rice1,2 (M)

b. c 1594, d. 03 May 1663, #1

Deacon Edmund Rice was born circa 1594 at England. As reported later in this account of Edmund Rice, no record of his birth or christening has been found.1,3 Deacon Edmund Rice married 1st Thomasine Frost, daughter of Edward Frost and Thomasine Belgrave, on 15 October 1618 at St Marys Church, Bury St. Edmunds, England.4,2,5 Deacon Edmund Rice married Mercy Hurd? on 1 March 1655/56 at Sudbury, MA, (literally 1655) registered as Mary Brigham.2,6 Deacon Edmund Rice died on 3 May 1663 at Sudbury, MA, (not found in the published records).1,2 He was buried at Old Burying Ground, Wayland, MA; One possible site of the grave is marked by a monument designed by Arthur Wallace Rice of Boston, MA. It was dedicated by the Edmund Rice Association on 29 August 1914. A boulder with a bronze tablet was also erected by the Association and it marks Edmund's homestead on the Old Connecticut Path in Wayland.2

He and Thomasine Frost resided in 1627 at Berkhamstead, England.7,8 Deacon Edmund Rice was in a land transaction in 1638 where he acquired 4 acres in then Sudbury (now Wayland) and laid out in the fall of that year. He was one of the first to build in the area. According to Massachusetts Colonial Records, Volume 1, page 271, on 3 September 1639 Edmund Rice was one of the committee appointed by the Massachusetts General Court to lay out the land in Sudbury in 1639.

Edmund Rice's house was situated on the "Old North Street", near Mill brook. He received his proportion of "Meadowlands", which were divided "to the present inhabitants" under dates of 4 September 1639, 20 April, and 18 November 164-, his share being 42 1/2 acres. He shared in all the division of Uplands and Commons - the total number of acres which fell to his lot, as an original inhabitant, was 247.9

Deacon Edmund Rice was a Selectman in 1644 and subsequent years; a Deacon of the church in 1648, and, in 1656, one of the petitioners for a new plantation that became known as Marlborough at Sudbury, MA.10 He was designated a freeman on 13 May 1640 at Massachusetts.11 He became Deacon of the Church at Sudbury, MA, in 1648.8 He was a deputy to the General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony (the Massachusetts legislature) representing the Town of Sudbury, serving on 27 May 1652, 18 May 1653, and 3 May 1654 between 1652 and 1654 at Boston, MA.12 He resided after 1656 at Marlborough, MA, lived on "The Great Road" on the northerly side of the pond (Cochituate Pond), not far from Williams Tavern. The pond is also spelled Wachittuate, Caochituet, Chochichawicke, Coijchawicke, Catchchauitt, Charchittawick, Katchetuit, Cochichawauke, or Cochichowicke.13

Twice in the 20th century nationally recognized research genealogists have attempted to determine the parents and ancestors of Edmund Rice. Mary Lovering Holman described the negative result of her search for records in the parishes near Stanstead and Sudbury, Suffolk County, England in English Notes on Edmund Rice, The American Genealogist, Volume 10 (1933/34), pp. 133 - 137. Mrs Holman is considered by many to be one of the best research genealogists in the 20th century. In 1997 the Edmund Rice (1638) Association commissioned Dr. Joanna Martin, a nationally recognized research genealogist who lives in Hitcham, Suffolk, England, only a few miles from Stanstead and Sudbury, to search again for records of Edmund Rice's parents. Dr. Martin reported in 1999 that she found no record that identified Edmund's parents or ancestral line.

Several authors of published works and computer data sets have claimed names for Edmund Rice's parents. Regrettably they have not given sources that would assist in definitive genealogical research. For example, the Ancestral File and International Genealogical Index, two popular computer data sets widely distributed by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, offer parent candidates that include: Henry Rice and Margaret Baker, Henry Rice and Elizabeth Frost, Thomas Rice and Catherine Howard, and Thomas Rice and Elizabeth Frost.

From Mrs. Holman's paper we have an excellent record of one Henry Rice's marriage to Elizabeth Frost in November 1605 at Stanstead. Mrs. Holman also documents the baptism of Edmund's first child on 23 August 1619 at Stanstead. If this is the Henry Rice and Elizabeth Frost to which the LDS records refer, the LDS records must be erroneous. Our researchers have not been able to find records that support any Henry Rice and Elizabeth Frost, Henry Rice and Margaret Baker, Thomas Rice and Catherine Howard, or Thomas Rice and Elizabeth Frost as parents of Edmund Rice.

A scholarly investigation by Donald Lines Jacobus, considered by many as the dean of modern American genealogy, appeared in The American Genealogist, volume 11, (1936), pp. 14-21 and was reprinted in the fall of 1968 and the winter of 1998 issues of Newsletter of the Edmund Rice (1638) Association. Jacobus traced many of the false accounts to the book by Dr. Charles Elmer Rice entitled "By the Name of Rice, privately published by Dr. Rice at Alliance, Ohio in 1911.

Sudbury, England includes three parishes, two of which do not have complete records for the years near 1594, which is Edmund's most likely birth year. Edmund Rice deposed in a court document on 3 April 1656 that he was about 62 years old. Thus, if he were born in Sudbury his records have been lost and we may never know his origin.

In his address to the 1999 annual meeting of the Edmund Rice (1638) Association, Gary Boyd Roberts, Senior Researcher, New England Historic Genealogy Society, reviewed all of the genealogical sleuthing on Edmund's parentage. Mr. Roberts is well known for his research on royal lineage. He concluded that there was no evidence whatsoever that supports the published accounts of Edmund Rice's parents and no evidence that Edmund Rice was from a royal lineage.

The Edmund Rice (1638) Association is very interested in proving the ancestry of Edmund Rice. The association encourages anyone who can identify a primary source that names Edmund and his parents to identify that source. Records of a baptism, estate probate, or land transaction naming Edmund and his parents are the most likely records to contain that proof. Until someone can cite such a record, the association must state emphatically that Edmund Rice's parents and ancestry are not known and that Edmund Rice's descendants can not claim royal ancestry.14,15,16 WRN: 1.

Notes for MERCY HURD:

Mercy was 10 or 15 years younger than her husband, and that, persecuted in England for nonconformity, she came to New England with her sister, who married William (?) Cutter.

Mercy Hurd married for her second husband, 1 March 1655, Edmund Rice, then of Sudbury, but who removed in 1660 to Marlboro, where he died 3 May 1663.

On Mar 26, 1676, she was with the people of Marlboro when assembled in their meeting house for worship when the alarm was sounded and they barely reached the garrison house in time to find safety from the attacking Indians, who burned houses and barns and destroyed orchards and cattle. The people shortly retreated to the towns to the eastward, where they remained for some months until peace was assured.

Notes from The History of the Brigham Family from the New Hampshire Historic Society 20 Park Street, Concord, New Hampshire, obtained by Ken and Susan Barbi on August 12, 2000.

Mercy Hurd? was born circa 1613 at England.2,3 She married 1st Thomas Brigham circa 1637 at Cambridge, MA.4,5 Mercy Hurd? married Deacon Edmund Rice on 1 March 1655/56 at Sudbury, MA, (literally 1655) registered as Mary Brigham.2,6 Mercy Hurd? married 3rd William Hunt in May 1663 at Cambridge, MA, William of Marlborough.7,8 Mercy Hurd? died on 22 December 1693 at Marlborough, MA, under the name Hunt.2,9

The 1656 marriage record apparently gives her name as Mary, while the Brigham probate records call her both Mary and Mercy. However, it should be noted that 'Marcy' is often misread as 'Mary.' The probate file of Thomas Brigham confirms that his widow Mercy was married to Edmund Rice by 1656.10

Lived in Sudbury, MA.

Deacon Edward Rice1,2 (M)

b. c 1619, d. 15 Aug 1712, #57

Pedigree

Deacon Edward Rice was the son of Deacon Edmund Rice and Thomasine Frost. Deacon Edward Rice was christened on 26 October 1622 at Stanstead, England; (20th per Rice Gen'l Register) under the name Ryce. The 1622 baptism record gives the child's name as Edmund, not Edward. Nonetheless, your authors are convinced that Edward was the child baptized (and of course born) that year, and that he exaggerated his age in later life.3,4 He married Agnes Bent circa 1647.5,3,6 Deacon Edward Rice died on 15 August 1712 at Marlborough, MA, at about age 93.5,7

He received one lot in the Sudbury Two-Mile Grant in 1655. In 1655 at Sudbury, MA.8 He resided in 1664 at Marlborough, MA, were he was a Deacon of the church.9 He declared age 42 in a paper filed in court on 2 October 1666 at Middlesex County Court, Cambridge, MA.10 He was assessed 8s 7d in the 1688 Marlborough tax roll. In 1668 at Marlborough, MA.11 He was in a land transaction on 1 April 1686 at Sudbury, MA, to their son Edmund Rice of Sudbury, half of the farm lying within the bounds of Sudbury, "near the spring". (Edward had purchased this from his father Edmund and some purchased from his brother Benjamin. John Rice of Sudbury, a brother of Edmund had the choice half.) Deed recorded 16 August 1734.5,12 He was elected deacon in 1687.13 He was questioned in court aged 70y in 1692 at MA.14 A 1712 obituary in the Boston News Letter gave the death year as 1711 and said he had been born in Berkhamstead in 1618. It also said he had 142 descendants at that time, of which 119 were living. It further said that Edward's brother Henry, who had died in Framingham in 1711, had a similarly large number of descendants.15 WRN: 3.

More About DEACON EDWARD RICE:

Christening: 20 Oct 1622, Stanstead, Suffolk, England13

Notes for AGNES BENT:

Barbara Abate's info suggests child Anna Rice married a Thomas Rice, apparent son of Thomas Rice and Mary King (a first cousin?)

Agnes Bent1 (F)

b. 12 Dec 1631, d. 04 Jun 1713, #58

Agnes Bent was born on 12 December 1631 at Wayhill, Penton Grafton, England.2,3,4 She was baptized in 1631 at Penton Grafton, England. She married Deacon Edward Rice, son of Deacon Edmund Rice and Thomasine Frost, circa 1647.5,6,7 Agnes Bent died on 4 June 1713 at Marlborough, MA.5,2,3

Barry's History of Framingham states Agnes Bent was without issue, which is clearly wrong. The will of John Bent of 1672 makes provision specifically for his daughter Agnes Rice and her son John Rice, which not only shows she was still living at that time, but also proves she was indeed the wife of Edward Rice (there being only one John Rice available as a grandson of John Bent). The confusion stems from the fact that the birth records of her children and the record of her death all show her name as Ann (a common variant of Agnes in her time). She was also known as Anna Bent.

Thomas Brigham married a second wife Susanna, on 30 July 1695, daughter of William Shattuck of Watertown and widow (1) of Joseph Morse and (2) of John Fay, whose first wife was Mary, the sister of Thomas. It will be noted that every descendant of Thomas is also a descendant of Edmund Rice, who is an ancestor of many colonial families in eastern Massachusetts. He had a large number of children, some of whom were of mature age at the time of the emigration.

Notes for ENSIGN JONATHAN BRIGHAM:

Jonathan Brigham married his cousin, Mary Fay. He settled in what was a part of the Thomas Brigham Estate in Marlboro, Massachusetts. He was prominent in his community and held offices of responsibility. He was commonly called the "Indian Warrior". One day while chopping in the woods, he saw a savage preparing to take aim at him; he seized his musket, stepped forward in full view, exclaiming as he did so, "Shoot straight, you dog". Both fired at the same moment, then the Indian dropped his gun, and with a tremendous whoop, bounded high into the air and fell dead. The Indian's bullet passed close to the ear of Jonathan, who escaped unhurt.

He married (2) MEHITABLE GOULD. She died Unknown.

Notes for NATHAN BRIGHAM:

Morse states that Captain Nathan Brigham settled on a part of the Thomas homestead, his house being a garrison house in Queen Anne's War. He was a weaver. He inherited the town-right of his father and drew shares of the public land in this right. He held town offices and was 7 years a selectman and for the last time in 1738; was representative in 1726 and '30. April 5, 1733, he made his will, giving his son Thomas 100 acres where he then resided, a house, 6 acres of meadow in Marlboro and 70 acres in Sutton; also a 16 acre town-right, originally John Rediet Jr.'s. His wife, Mehitable, received 20 pounds for a mourning suit, and Ephraim, who had the homestead, was to support her and pay her funeral expenses. March 26, 1746-7, the heirs signed an agreement dividing his estate.

Capt Nathan Brigham1,2 (M)

b. 17 Jun 1671, d. 16 Feb 1746/47, #1909

Pedigree

Capt Nathan Brigham was born on 17 June 1671 at Marlborough, MA.1,3,4,5 He was the son of Thomas Brigham and Mary Rice. Capt Nathan Brigham married Elizabeth Maynard circa 1690 at Marlborough, MA, (your authors note that the 1664 marriage date cited in Supplement 1 is actually Elizabeth's birth date. There is no record of the marriage in the Marlborough VR).6 Capt Nathan Brigham married Elizabeth How it is noted that this is a very unlikely marriage. Regrettably there is no marriage in the Marlborough vital records for Nathan Brigham. However, the death information about Nathan's wife Elizabeth correlates with the birth record for Elizabeth Maynard.7 Capt Nathan Brigham died on 16 February 1746/47 at Marlborough, MA, aged 75y 8m.7,8

Your authors note that no marriage for this Nathan Brigham is found in the Marlborough vital records. Thus, the identification of his wife Elizabeth depends on indirect evidence. Her recorded age at death is sufficient: it matches exactly the recorded birth of Elizabeth Maynard and is fully nine years off from the birth of Elizabeth How. It is, of course, conceivable that Nathan married two different Elizabeths in succession, although, in that case, we would have not just one, but three, unrecorded events to explain (the two marriages and the death of the first wife). If that is indeed the case, then the first wife (Elizabeth How) is most likely the mother of Nathan's children. Investigation of the How and Maynard probate records may shed light on this question. He and Elizabeth How resided at Marlborough, MA.9 WRN: 79.

Notes for LIEUT. NATHAN BRIGHAM:

Morse gather the following facts about Lieut. Natham Brigham. Prior to the second division of the original township of Marlboro, in 1727, Nathan held several minor town offices, but in the new town of Southboro, to which he was set off, he appears at once among her principal citizens, serving the first year as a selectman and soon after as treasurer. He was repeatedly placed on committees for hiring schoolmasters and chosen for the 29th time as a selectman at the age of 77 years, at which he remonstrated and was, with public thank,, excused. He lived near the houses of Samuel and Dana Brigham in the north part of Southboro, and is presumed to have inherited the lands southeast of Crane meadow, drawn in his grandfather Thomas' right. He did inherit the Bible, law-book, cane and sword of his father Nathan. He retained his vigor to a great age and when in his 90th year used to mount his horse without assistance.

Park, Hattie, and their five children had a cottage near The Gulf on what was then called Mansfield's Point, where George Merrill laid the stone steps leading from the dock to the Fay's' house. In the side yard, a tent was built to hold the overflow of children and friends. It was the children's job to gather rocks from the lake for the stone mason, Mr. Zibley of Center Harbor, to build the living room fireplace.

Mary Perkins Witch Trial Information

Source: "The Family of John Perkins of Ipswich, Massachusetts", by Geo. A. Perkins, M.D., Salem, 1882

"In 1692, Jacob Perkinss sister Mary Perkins Bradbury was placed on trial for witchcraft. At the time, she was living in Salisbury, Massachusetts. Richard Carr's father had been a suitor of Mary before she married Thomas Bradbury. This led to a fifteen year disagreement with Mary and he probably influenced his sons and his son's friend in their testimony. Her reply to the indictment was as follows:

"I plead not guilty. I am wholly innocent of such wickedness through the goodness of God that hath kept me hitherto. I am the servant of Jesus Christ, and have given myself up to him as my only Lord and Saviour, and to the diligent attendance upon him in all his holy ordinances, in utter contempt and defiance of the Devil and all his works, as horrid and detestable; and have endeavored to frame my life and conversation in accordance with His holy word and in that faith and practice, resolve, by the help and assistance of God, to continue to my life's end. For the truth of what I have to say as to the matter of practice, I humbly refer myself to my brethren and neighbors that know me, and to the searcher of all hearts, for the truth and uprightness of my heart therein, human frailties & unavoidable infirmaties excepted, of which I bitterly complain every day."

All of the depositions against Mary were recorded in Seargent Thomas Putnam's handwriting except one. Richard Carr and Zarubabel Endicott testified that they had seen a blue boar come from and re-enter her yard and window. This was spectral evidence. Samuel Carr, Richard's brother also testified that he had seen Mary perched on the capstan of a ship at sea when things were going badly. William Carr testified that there was nothing he knew against Mary and referred to a broken love affair between the families.

Mr. and Mrs. Bradbury were prominent citizens and signatures of 118 of her friends and neighbors of a statement

"Concerning Mary Bradbury's life and conversation, we, the subscribers, do testify, that it was such as became the gospel: she was a lover of the ministry, in all appearance, and a diligent attender upon God' holy ordinances, being of a courteous and peaceable disposition and carriage. Neither did any of us (some of whom have lived in the town with her above fifty years) ever hear or ever know that she ever had any differences of falling-out with any of her neighbors, man, woman or child, but was always ready and willing to do for them what lay in her power night and day, though with hazard of her health or other danger. More might be spoken in her commendation, but this for the present."

This written testimony was not enough, as she was convicted anyway. By this time the Court of Oyer and Terminer had agreed not to execute any who plead guilty, but Mary had pleaded not guilty. She was convicted of witchcraft on 9 Sep 1692 and sentenced to be executed on 22 Sep 1692. It is not known how she escapted.

The last convicted witch execution took place on 22 Sep 1692. In the following month, the new Governor Phipps was appointed and put an end to the Court of Oyer and Terminer that had been doing the sentencing. Any remaining convicted witches (those that had plead guilt) had their sentences commuted by the governor. This was the end of the trials. On 17 Dec 1711, the governor and council authorized payment to twenty-three persons condemned at Salem. Marys descendants received twenty pounds in compensation."

Excerpts from : Bradbury memorial.

Records of some of the descendants of Thomas Bradbury, of Agamenticus (York) in 1634, and of Salisbury, Mass. in 1638, with a brief sketch of the Bradburys of England. Comp. chiefly from the collections of the late John Merrill Bradbury, of Ipswich, Mass. Page 63 - regarding Mary (Perkins) Bradbury at the Salem Witch Trails - During the trial of Mrs. Bradbury, July 28, 1692, upon the charge of being a witch, her aged and devoted husband bore testimony to her high character and the purity of her life in the following terms:

"Concerning my beloved wife, Mary Bradbury, this is what I have to say: We have been married fifty-five years, and she hath been a loving and faithful wife unto me unto this day. She hath been wonderful laborious, diligent and industrious in her place and employment about the bringing up of our family which have been eleven children of our own, and four grandchildren. She was both prudent and provident, of cheerful spirit, liberal and charitable. She being now very aged and weak, and grieved under aflictious, may not be able to speak much for herself, not being so free of speech as some others might be. I hope her life and conversation among her neighbors has been such as gives a better or more real testimony than can be expressed by words."

Rev. James Allen testified as follows: "I, having lived nine years at Salisbury in the work of the ministry, and now four years in the office of pastor, to my best notice and observation of Mrs. Bradbury, she hath lived according to the rules of the gospel amongst us; was a constant attender upon the ministry of the word, and all the ordinances of the gospel; full of works of charity and mercy to the sick and poor; neither have I seen or heard anything of her unbecoming the profession of the gospel."

Upham, the historian of the Salem witchcraft, says of Mrs. Bradbury: "The position as well as character and age of Mary (Perkins) Bradbury, entitled her to the highest consideration in the structure of society at that time. This is recognized in the title Mrs. Uniformly given her. She had been noted through life for energy, business capacity, and influence: her husband Thomas Bradbury had been a prominent character in the colony for more than fifty years."

The character of the evidence used against Mrs. Bradbury may be judged by the following: "The deposition of William Carr, who testifieth and saith that about thirteen years ago, presently after some difference that happened to be between my honored father, Mr. George Carr, and Mrs. Bradbury, the prisoner at her bar, upon a Sabbath at noon, as we were riding home by the house of Capt. Thomas Bradbury, I saw Mrs. Bradbury go into her gate, turn the corner of, and immediately there darted out of her gate a blue boar, and darted at my fathers horses legs which made him stumble; but I saw it no more. And my father said, "Boys, what did you see?" And we both said, "A blue boar!" This venerable woman was about eighty years of age when she was arrested for the crime of bewitching John Carr so that he became crazed and prematurely died. The testimony of William Carr at the trial, went to show that his brother fell in love with Jemima True, but the proposed match being opposed and broken off by the father of young Carr, on account of his youth, he became melancholy and at times insane. He further stated that he was with his brother and cared for him in his last sickness, and that his brother died peaceably and quietly, and never spoke anything to the harm of Mrs. Bradbury or anybody else.

Mrs. Bradbury was defended by Major Robert Pike. She was convicted with four others who were executed September, 1692. Mrs. Bradbury escaped punishment, but by what means, does not appear.

From Wikipedia

Mary (née Perkins) Bradbury (baptized September 3, 1615 - December 20, 1700) was tried, convicted and sentenced to hang as a witch in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. However, she managed to evade sentence until the trials had been discredited, and died in 1700, aged 85.

Mary Perkins was daughter of John and Judith (née Gater) Perkins, baptized in 1615, at Warwickshire, England. Her family immigrated to America in 1631, sailing on the LYON from Bristol. In 1636 she married Thomas Bradbury of Salisbury, Massachusetts, considered one of its most distinguished citizens, land agent for his great-uncle Ferdinando Gorges and son of Elizabeth Whitgift, whose uncle John Whitgift was Archbishop of Canterbury under Elizabeth and James.

In the notorious witch trials of 1692, Mary Bradbury was indicted for (among other charges):

Certaine Detestable arts called Witchcraft & Sorceries Wickedly Mallitiously and felloniously hath used practiced and Exercised At and in the Township of Andivor in the County of Essex aforesaid in upon & against one Timothy Swann of Andivor In the County aforesaid Husbandman - by which said Wicked Acts the said Timothy Swann upon the 26th day of July Aforesaid and divers other days & times both before and after was and is Tortured Afflicted Consumed Pined Wasted and Tormented.Witnesses testified that she assumed animal forms; her most unusual metamorphosis was said to have been that of a blue boar. Another allegation was that she cast spells upon ships. Over a hundred of her neighbors and townspeople testified on her behalf, but to no avail and she was found guilty of practicing magic and sentenced to be executed. Through the ongoing efforts of her friends, her execution was delayed. After the witch debacle had passed, she was released. By some accounts she was allowed to escape. Others claim she bribed her jailer. Another account claims that her husband bribed the jailer and took her away to Maine in a horse and cart. They returned to Massachusetts after the witch hysteria had died down. Mary Bradbury died of natural causes in her own bed in 1700, aged 85.

Her family friend, and her son-in-law's father, Major Robert Pike, was in command of all the forces of Norfolk County, Massachusetts Bay Colony and those located in present-day Maine. As early as 1650 he was what would now be called a trial justice and in 1672 an associate judge of the courts of Norfolk Co. In political life a member of the General Court when 32 and of the Governor's Council from 1682-96, when having reached the age of 50 years he retired to the private life of the farm.

Mary Perkins Bradbury and Thomas Bradbury had eleven children:

Wymond Bradbury (1637-1669), married Sarah Pike, daughter of Major Robert Pike

Thomas Bradbury (1640-1718)

Wilbur Fay handled the northeast route for ice deliveries and also delivered groceries from the Bear Island store on Lake Winnipesaukee.

According to Fred Bulkley, "Ice was cut from the lake in the winter, covered with sawdust and stored in the big ice house at the shore line. It was my job to haul the 300 pound blocks of ice from the ice house and saw them into 75 pound pieces which sold at 50 cents each, delivered. The ice route ran four days a week in the morning, along northwest Bear and Pine and to the Beaver Islands in the afternoon. The Merrills' nephew, Wilbur Fay, handled the northeast route and also delivered groceries from the store."

from the Concord Bridge newspaper

Annie Fay Holt, a loving mother, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother, left us on May 27, 2023, at the age of 101.

Annie was born in Laconia, New Hampshire on March 21,1922 the daughter of the late Victor and Blanche (Dolloff) Rand. Upon graduating from Laconia High School, she enlisted in the WAVES, or Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service, a branch of female reservists in the United States Navy, where she served as a Radioman 3rd class. Stationed in California, Annie was responsible for transmitting battle orders to the Pacific Fleet by morse code.

While serving in the Navy, she married her high school sweetheart, George Fay, who was also serving in the Navy as a lieutenant. After the war ended, George and Annie settled in Wakefield, Massachusetts, where they raised two sons.

Annie earned a bachelor´s degree from Salem State University and a master´s degree from Tufts University before beginning a career in teaching. She taught in the Lexington school system for many years. After George died, she moved to Concord, where she became very active with the West Concord Union Church. She met John Holt in Concord, and they were married in 1980.

Annie and John raised quarter horses together in Groton and Barrington, New Hampshire, before returning to Concord in 1994. Annie and John were valued members of the West Concord Union Church congregation and particularly enjoyed their involvement in Sunday Fellowship, a community for adults of all abilities. Following John´s death, Annie continued to be active member in the Concord community, a frequent host to friends and family, a world traveler, and a volunteer with the Concord Women´s Club. An avid reader, swimmer, and faithful letter writer, Annie lived independently until she reached 100, a longtime goal. For this milestone, Annie was celebrated by family, friends, neighbors, church members, and even former students from decades past.

Annie is survived by her sister, Marilyn Healy, her sons Park Fay, Steven Fay, and Wayne Holt, eleven grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren.

In over five decades in education, Dr. Fay taught and mentored thousands of students, and was known for his patience and ability to uncover hidden talent in students with different learning styles. A favorite photographic subject has been artists at work, including at the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, NH and at Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music in Sullivan, NH. He also photographed actors narrating Ken Burns' documentaries, including the actors Hal Holbrook and Blythe Danner.

Nature photography was a longstanding interest. He was the author of a book, Ocian in View! O! The Joy. A Collection of Photographs of the American West and he produced a slide show entitled Speak to the Earth, dedicated to the beauty of the Monadnock Region. In recent years he exhibited photographs on the subject of Walden Pond in Concord, MA.

Kennedy to Amherst College in 1963 for the dedication of the college's new Robert Frost Library, Kennedy's last major speech before his assassination. When Dr. Fay died, he was working on an exhibition of those photographs to be displayed at the 50th anniversary of Kennedy's speech at Amherst later this year.

He graduated with a BA from Amherst College in 1956 and received his Doctorate in Education from Harvard in 1968.
