The Fay Family in America for Over 374 Years

Descendants of Ralph Hemenway (1603 - 1678)

Generation No. 1

1. RALPH1 HEMENWAY was born 1603 in Bradford, West Riding, Yorkshire, England, England, and died 01 Jun 1678 in Roxbury, Massachusetts. He met ELIZABETH HEWES 05 Jul 1634 in Roxbury, Massachusetts, daughter of JOHN HEWES and MARY FOOTE. She was born 1603 in Royston, Hertfordshire, England, and died 02 Feb 1686 in Roxbury, Massachusetts.

Notes for RALPH HEMENWAY:

Unlike many American families of English origin all Hemenways and Hemingways in this country have a common ancestor in Ralph of Roxbury, Mass. The first US census taken in 1790 uses one spelling commonly in Massachusetts and in Connecticut the other spelling.

Ralph Hemenway came to America during the period termed the "Great Migration". In 1630, Gov. John Winthrop b. 1583 d. Boston 1649 came to America. With him came a fleet of fifteen vessels bringing one thousand people and within ten years twenty thousand came.

Several towns sprang up among them Roxbury.

During the life of Ralph Hemenway, the town of Roxbury was considered the retreat of the wealthy citizens of Boston and by them a part of the city rather than a village by itself. It is located about three miles south of Boston Common. Between Roxbury and Boston was a stretch of waste and marshy land commonly known as the Neck.

Willow trees on both sides outlined the road to enable travelers to avoid the mire of the marsh. At what is now Dover Street, the narrowest part of the isthmus a mud wall had been thrown up with a pair of strong gates and this fortification with various improvements remained until 1832 or nearly 200 years as a line between city and country.

None could enter after gates were closed at sun down. A history of the first church of Roxbury 1630-1904 has been published. Ralph was a member as early as 1633, and was admitted a freeman September 3, 1634. He was a proprietor of the town.

The oldest church in America still used as a "meeting house" is in Hingham, Mass. It was at that time in Plymouth Colony. It is termed the "Old Ship". There is also an old over-shot mill at New London, Conn. built during the life of Ralph still grinding corn and at Fairfield in the same state the post for the town bulletins stands where the whipping post stood in 1639.

It has been said that most of the Hemingways in America descended from Ralph Hemingway who settled in Roxbury, Massachusetts about 1633. We have found that there were several Hemingways in England before America was colonized and it is hard to believe that only one made the voyage to America. It is known that some came in the nineteenth century. However the Hemingways in America may all share a common ancestry, not from Ralph Hemingway of Roxbury but from inhabitants of the old parish of Halifax, Yorkshire, some seven hundred years ago.

Research of 15th century records shows the name Hemingway to be the most numerous in the Yorkshire area of England. Our genealogical researcher, Dr. Arlene Eakle, has been searching Yorkshire records back to 1309.

Ralph Hemingway was not a name found in the Yorkshire area in the 1600's or before. The Yorkshire Hemingways were landowners who left wills and gave to charities. These are the records our researcher has found.

Ralph is known to have been in Roxbury, Massachusetts in 1633. He married Elizabeth Hewes in Roxbury in June or July 1634 and was a freeman there in September 1634. Elizabeth was the daughter of John Hewes and Mary Foote of Shelford, Essex, England. She had a brother, Joshua Hewes, who came to America and was a prominent man in Roxbury.

Ralph and Elizabeth had seven children: Maria (1635-1635; Samuel (1636-1711); Ruth (1638-1686); John (1641-1724), as Elizabeth's father; Joshua (1634-1716), as Elizabeth's brother; Elizabeth (1645-1719), as herself; and Mary (1647-1653), as Elizabeth's mother. With the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th child being named from Elizabeth's family one might expect that the 1st and 2nd were named for Ralph's family. Could his father be Samuel? A Samuel was found in the Yorkshire records, but no proven connection to Ralph has been found. Ralph died in 1677 at Roxbury. Elizabeth died in Roxbury 2 February 1685/6 at age 82. Their son, Joshua, moved to Framingham, Massachusetts and their son Samuel went to Connecticut.

Descendants of both Samuel and Joshua were involved in the development of Massachusetts and Connecticut colonies. There were numerous Hemingways and Hemenways active in the colonial period and in the American Revolution. The name was brought westward as the United States expanded inland.

Ralph Hemingway, the emigrant ancestor, was born c. 1603 near Bradford, West Riding, Yorkshire, England. Where Hemingborough and other related Place-names exist. Ralph probably indentured himself as a servant to get to New England, for John ELIOT's diary records him as such. He came over during the period termed the "Great Migration". In 1630 Governor John Winthrop came to America and with him came a fleet of 15 vessels bringing one thousand people. Ralph purchased 16 acres of land and settled in Roxbury, Mass. He was a member of the Roxbury Church as early as 1633 and was admitted a freeman September 3, 1634. By 1635 he was one of the largest property owners and tax payers in town and gave liberally to the Roxbury Free School. His will was dated May 4, 1677 and proved July 11, 1678. He d. June 1, 1678. m. July 5 1634 Elizabeth HEWES dau. John and Mary (FOOTE) HEWES (HEWS) see Hewes Family b. c. 1603 Royston, Hertfordshire, England; d. February 4, 1684 at 82 years in Roxbury, Mass.; Children born Roxbury.

The name is an exceedingly ancient and historic one. It appears in the oldest Germanic epic, Beowolf recording in the late 600's events of the early 500's in the history of the [unreadable] a southern Scandinavian people, the Geats, Beowulf's people, and of the "Spear-Danes." The Angles set down these tales of fellow-tribes, before they migrated to England, or very shortly thereafter. In Part II, 27, King Offa is called "The Kingsman of Hemming" and "The Song of Hemming" is mentioned. The true and ancient spelling of this old Norse-Danish name is HEMINGWAY later used in America by the Boston Hemingways who continued to live in the Boston-Roxbury area and became affluent and by Samuel, eldest son of Ralph (no. 127) who moved to New Haven and together with the Pardees (see Wooster chart) owned the "largest number of slaves" there.

Ralph Hemenway came from near Bradford, 10 miles SW from Leeds, West of Riding of Yorkshire, where Hemingbrough and other related placenames exist. In 1967 the largest fashion-shop on Main St., Leeds, was "Hemingway's."

Ralph, 22, probably indentured himself as a servant to get to New England, for John Eliot's diary records him as such. In 1634 he became a freeman, purchased 16 acres in Roxbury, and married Elizabeth Hewes. By 1639 he was one of the largest property owners and tax payers in town and gave liberally to the Roxbury Free School. President William Howard Taft was a descendant of Ralph Hemenway (as he was also of our Aldrich, Albee, Chapin, Hayward, Osborn, and Thurston.)

My information agrees with you except that I have George Hemenway as dying 28 August 1881, which does not conflict with other data. My death date source is "The History of Framingham", by J.H. Temple, 1887. That book was written just six years after the cited death date. Temple cites the same 1807 birth

date for George as you have, as does Barry in his 1847 "History of Framingham".

I did not have a wife listed for George's son Benjamin S. Hemenway. I have updated my file per your information -- Annette Burley. Who were Ida Mae's siblings? Could you provide the rest of this line from Benjamin and Annette?

Thanks, JIM GIBBS

Notes for ERNEST M. HEMENWAY:

Ernest Hemingway
Ernest Hemenway

Hemingway, Ernest Miller (1899-1961), American novelist and short-story writer, whose style is characterized by crispness, laconic dialogue, and emotional understatement. Hemingway's writings and his personal life exerted a profound influence on American writers of his time. Many of his works are regarded as classics of American literature, and some have been made into motion pictures.

Born in Oak Park, Illinois, Hemingway was educated at Oak Park High School. After graduating from high school in 1917, he became a reporter for the Kansas City Star, but he left his job within a few months to serve as a volunteer ambulance driver in Italy during World War I (1914-1918). He later transferred to the Italian infantry and was severely wounded. After the war he served as a correspondent for the Toronto Star and then settled in Paris. While there, he was encouraged in creative work by the American expatriate writers Ezra Pound and Gertrude Stein. After 1927 Hemingway spent long periods of time in Key West, Florida, and in Spain and Africa. During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), he returned to Spain as a newspaper correspondent. In World War II (1939-1945) he again was a correspondent and later was a reporter for the United States First Army; although he was not a soldier, he participated in several battles. After the war Hemingway settled near Havana, Cuba, and in 1958 he moved to Ketchum, Idaho.

Hemingway drew heavily on his experiences as an avid fisherman, hunter, and bullfight enthusiast (see Bullfighting) in his writing. His adventurous life brought him close to death several times: in the Spanish Civil War when shells burst inside his hotel room; in World War II when he was struck by a taxi during a blackout; and in 1954 when his airplane crashed in Africa.

A Writer of the Lost Generation

One of the foremost authors of the era between the two world wars, Hemingway in his early works depicted the lives of two types of people. One type consisted of men and women deprived, by World War I, of faith in the moral values in which they had believed, and who lived with cynical disregard for anything but their own emotional needs. The other type were men of simple character and primitive emotions, such as prizefighters and bullfighters. Hemingway wrote of their courageous and usually futile battles against circumstances. His earliest works include the collections of short stories Three Stories and Ten Poems (1923), his first work; In Our Time (1924), tales reflecting his experiences as a youth in the northern Michigan woods; Men Without Women (1927), a volume that included "The Killers," remarkable for its description of impending doom; and Winner Take Nothing (1933), stories characterizing people in unfortunate circumstances in Europe. The novel that established Hemingway's reputation, The Sun Also Rises (1926), is the story of a group of morally irresponsible Americans and Britons living in France and Spain, members of the so-called lost generation of the post-World War I period. Hemingway's second important novel, A Farewell to Arms (1929), is the story of a deeply moving love affair in wartime Italy between an American officer in the Italian ambulance service and a British nurse. The novel was followed by two nonfiction works, Death in the Afternoon (1932), prose pieces mainly about bullfighting; and Green Hills of Africa (1935), accounts of big-game hunting.

Writing Style

Hemingway's economical writing style often seems simple and almost childlike, but his method is calculated and used to complex effect. In his writing Hemingway provided detached descriptions of action, using simple nouns and verbs to capture scenes precisely. By doing so he avoided describing his characters' emotions and thoughts directly. Instead, in providing the reader with the raw material of an experience and eliminating the authorial viewpoint, Hemingway made the reading of a text approximate the actual experience as closely as possible. Hemingway was also deeply concerned with authenticity in writing. He believed that a writer could treat a subject honestly only if the writer had participated in or observed the subject closely. Without such knowledge the writer's work would be flawed because the reader would sense the author's lack of expertise. In addition, Hemingway believed that an author writing about a familiar subject is able to write sparingly and eliminate a great deal of superfluous detail from the piece without sacrificing the voice of authority. Hemingway's stylistic influence on American writers has been enormous. The success of his plain style in expressing basic, yet deeply felt, emotions contributed to the decline of the elaborate Victorian-era prose that characterized a great deal of American writing in the early 20th century. Legions of American writers have cited Hemingway as an influence on their own work.

Social Concern

In his original work, Hemingway used themes of helplessness and defeat, but in the late 1930s he began to express concern about social problems. His novel To Have and Have Not (1937) and his play The Fifth Column, published in The Fifth Column and the First Forty-nine Stories (1938), strongly condemned economic and political injustices. Two of his best short stories, "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber" and "The Snows of Kilimanjaro," were part of the latter work. In the novel For Whom the Bell Tolls (1940), which deals with the Spanish Civil War, he showed that the loss of liberty anywhere in the world is a warning that liberty is endangered everywhere. During the next decade Hemingway's only literary efforts were Men at War: The Best War Stories of All Time (1942), which he edited, and the novel Across the River and into the Trees (1950). In 1952 Hemingway published The Old Man and the Sea, a powerful novelette about an aged Cuban fisherman, for which he won the 1953 Pulitzer Prize in fiction. In 1954 Hemingway was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature. The last work published in his lifetime was Collected Poems (1960). His death is regarded as a suicide. Hemingway's posthumously published books include A Moveable Feast (1964), an account of his early years in Paris; Byline: Ernest Hemingway (1967), selected newspaper articles and dispatches; Ernest Hemingway, Cub Reporter: Kansas City Star Stories (1970); Islands in the Stream (1970), a sea novel; and the unfinished The Garden of Eden (1986). Some 3000 of his manuscript pages remain unpublished.

Notes for HATTIE EDITH MERRILL:

Park Stone Fay, also a carpenter like Hattie's father, George Merrill, preferred an independent status. Instead of joining George Merrill, he handled all the boats and work at Beaver Island. Park, Hattie, and their five children had a cottage near The Gulf on what was then called Mansfield's Point, where George Merrill laid the stone steps leading from the dock to the Fay's' house. In the side yard, a tent was built to hold the overflow of children and friends. It was the children's job to gather rocks from the lake for the stone mason, Mr. Zibley of Center Harbor, to build the living room fireplace.

Mary Perkins Witch Trial Information

Source: "The Family of John Perkins of Ipswich, Massachusetts", by Geo. A. Perkins, M.D., Salem, 1882

"In 1692, Jacob Perkinss sister Mary Perkins Bradbury was placed on trial for witchcraft. At the time, she was living in Salisbury, Massachusetts. Richard Carr's father had been a suitor of Mary before she married Thomas Bradbury. This led to a fifteen year disagreement with Mary and he probably influenced his sons and his son's friend in their testimony. Her reply to the indictment was as follows:

"I plead not guilty. I am wholly innocent of such wickedness through the goodness of God that hath kept me hitherto. I am the servant of Jesus Christ, and have given myself up to him as my only Lord and Saviour, and to the diligent attendance upon him in all his holy ordinances, in utter contempt and defiance of the Devil and all his works, as horrid and detestable; and have endeavored to frame my life and conversation in accordance with His holy word and in that faith and practice, resolve, by the help and assistance of God, to continue to my life's end. For the truth of what I have to say as to the matter of practice, I humbly refer myself to my brethren and neighbors that know me, and to the searcher of all hearts, for the truth and uprightness of my heart therein, human frailties & unavoidable infirmaties excepted, of which I bitterly complain every day."

All of the depositions against Mary were recorded in Seargent Thomas Putnam's handwriting except one. Richard Carr and Zarubabel Endicott testified that they had seen a blue boar come from and re-enter her yard and window. This was spectral evidence. Samuel Carr, Richard's brother also testified that he had seen Mary perched on the capstan of a ship at sea when things were going badly. William Carr testified that there was nothing he knew against Mary and referred to a broken love affair between the families.

Mr. and Mrs. Bradbury were prominent citizens and signatures of 118 of her friends and neighbors of a statement

"Concerning Mary Bradbury's life and conversation, we, the subscribers, do testify, that it was such as became the gospel: she was a lover of the ministry, in all appearance, and a diligent attender upon God' holy ordinances, being of a courteous and peaceable disposition and carriage. Neither did any of us (some of whom have lived in the town with her above fifty years) ever hear or ever know that she ever had any differences of falling-out with any of her neighbors, man, woman or child, but was always ready and willing to do for them what lay in her power night and day, though with hazard of her health or other danger. More might be spoken in her commendation, but this for the present."

This written testimony was not enough, as she was convicted anyway. By this time the Court of Oyer and Terminer had agreed not to execute any who plead guilty, but Mary had pleaded not guilty. She was convicted of witchcraft on 9 Sep 1692 and sentenced to be executed on 22 Sep 1692. It is not known how she escapted.

The last convicted witch execution took place on 22 Sep 1692. In the following month, the new Governor Phipps was appointed and put an end to the Court of Oyer and Terminer that had been doing the sentencing. Any remaining convicted witches (those that had plead guilt) had their sentences commuted by the governor. This was the end of the trials. On 17 Dec 1711, the governor and council authorized payment to twenty-three persons condemned at Salem. Marys descendants received twenty pounds in compensation."

Excerpts from : Bradbury memorial.

Records of some of the descendants of Thomas Bradbury, of Agamenticus (York) in 1634, and of Salisbury, Mass. in 1638, with a brief sketch of the Bradburys of England. Comp. chiefly from the collections of the late John Merrill Bradbury, of Ipswich, Mass. Page 63 - regarding Mary (Perkins) Bradbury at the Salem Witch Trails - During the trial of Mrs. Bradbury, July 28, 1692, upon the charge of being a witch, her aged and devoted husband bore testimony to her high character and the purity of her life in the following terms:

"Concerning my beloved wife, Mary Bradbury, this is what I have to say: We have been married fifty-five years, and she hath been a loving and faithful wife unto me unto this day. She hath been wonderful laborious, diligent and industrious in her place and employment about the bringing up of our family which have been eleven children of our own, and four grandchildren. She was both prudent and provident, of cheerful spirit, liberal and charitable. She being now very aged and weak, and grieved under aflictious, may not be able to speak much for herself, not being so free of speech as some others might be. I hope her life and conversation among her neighbors has been such as gives a better or more real testimony than can be expressed by words."

Rev. James Allen testified as follows: "I, having lived nine years at Salisbury in the work of the ministry, and now four years in the office of pastor, to my best notice and observation of Mrs. Bradbury, she hath lived according to the rules of the gospel amongst us; was a constant attender upon the ministry of the word, and all the ordinances of the gospel; full of works of charity and mercy to the sick and poor; neither have I seen or heard anything of her unbecoming the profession of the gospel."

Upham, the historian of the Salem witchcraft, says of Mrs. Bradbury: "The position as well as character and age of Mary (Perkins) Bradbury, entitled her to the highest consideration in the structure of society at that time. This is recognized in the title Mrs. Uniformly given her. She had been noted through life for energy, business capacity, and influence: her husband Thomas Bradbury had been a prominent character in the colony for more than fifty years."

The character of the evidence used against Mrs. Bradbury may be judged by the following: "The deposition of William Carr, who testifieth and saith that about thirteen years ago, presently after some difference that happened to be between my honored father, Mr. George Carr, and Mrs. Bradbury, the prisoner at her bar, upon a Sabbath at noon, as we were riding home by the house of Capt. Thomas Bradbury, I saw Mrs. Bradbury go into her gate, turn the corner of, and immediately there darted out of her gate a blue boar, and darted at my fathers horses legs which made him stumble; but I saw it no more. And my father said, "Boys, what did you see?" And we both said, "A blue boar!" This venerable woman was about eighty years of age when she was arrested for the crime of bewitching John Carr so that he became crazed and prematurely died. The testimony of William Carr at the trial, went to show that his brother fell in love with Jemima True, but the proposed match being opposed and broken off by the father of young Carr, on account of his youth, he became melancholy and at times insane. He further stated that he was with his brother and cared for him in his last sickness, and that his brother died peaceably and quietly, and never spoke anything to the harm of Mrs. Bradbury or anybody else.

Mrs. Bradbury was defended by Major Robert Pike. She was convicted with four others who were executed September, 1692. Mrs. Bradbury escaped punishment, but by what means, does not appear.

From Wikipedia

Mary (née Perkins) Bradbury (baptized September 3, 1615 - December 20, 1700) was tried, convicted and sentenced to hang as a witch in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. However, she managed to evade sentence until the trials had been discredited, and died in 1700, aged 85.

Mary Perkins was daughter of John and Judith (née Gater) Perkins, baptized in 1615, at Warwickshire, England. Her family immigrated to America in 1631, sailing on the LYON from Bristol. In 1636 she married Thomas Bradbury of Salisbury, Massachusetts, considered one of its most distinguished citizens, land agent for his great-uncle Ferdinando Gorges and son of Elizabeth Whitgift, whose uncle John Whitgift was Archbishop of Canterbury under Elizabeth and James.

In the notorious witch trials of 1692, Mary Bradbury was indicted for (among other charges):

Certaine Detestable arts called Witchcraft & Sorceries Wickedly Mallitiously and felloniously hath used practiced and Exercised At and in the Township of Andivor in the County of Essex aforesaid in upon & against one Timothy Swann of Andivor In the County aforesaid Husbandman - by which said Wicked Acts the said Timothy Swann upon the 26th day of July Aforesaid and divers other days & times both before and after was and is Tortured Afflicted Consumed Pined Wasted and Tormented.Witnesses testified that she assumed animal forms; her most unusual metamorphosis was said to have been that of a blue boar. Another allegation was that she cast spells upon ships. Over a hundred of her neighbors and townspeople testified on her behalf, but to no avail and she was found guilty of practicing magic and sentenced to be executed. Through the ongoing efforts of her friends, her execution was delayed. After the witch debacle had passed, she was released. By some accounts she was allowed to escape. Others claim she bribed her jailer. Another account claims that her husband bribed the jailer and took her away to Maine in a horse and cart. They returned to Massachusetts after the witch hysteria had died down. Mary Bradbury died of natural causes in her own bed in 1700, aged 85.

Her family friend, and her son-in-law's father, Major Robert Pike, was in command of all the forces of Norfolk County, Massachusetts Bay Colony and those located in present-day Maine. As early as 1650 he was what would now be called a trial justice and in 1672 an associate judge of the courts of Norfolk Co. In political life a member of the General Court when 32 and of the Governor's Council from 1682-96, when having reached the age of 50 years he retired to the private life of the farm.

Mary Perkins Bradbury and Thomas Bradbury had eleven children:

Wymond Bradbury (1637-1669), married Sarah Pike, daughter of Major Robert Pike

Thomas Bradbury (1640-1718)

It was my job to haul the 300 pound blocks of ice from the ice house and saw them into 75 pound pieces which sold at 50 cents each, delivered. The ice route ran four days a week in the morning, along northwest Bear and Pine and to the Beaver Islands in the afternoon.
